Sulcorebutia dorana usually grows sprouting with depressed spherical bodies. With diameters of 3 to 6 centimeters, these reach heights of up to 2 centimeters (rarely 6 centimeters) and have a beet root that is up to 10 centimeters long and divided several times. The elongated areoles have a little gray felt. The central spine occasionally present on older areoles is protruding and up to 6 millimeters long. The 12 to 16 radial spines are more or less close-fitting to slightly protruding, light beige to straw-colored and 3 to 5 millimeters (rarely 20 millimeters) long.

The short funnel-shaped, purple-pink flowers are 3 centimeters long and have a diameter of up to 3.5 centimeters. The olive-green fruits dry out like parchment when ripe and tear open across. They have a diameter of 4 to 5 millimeters.
