Sulcorebutia cantargalloensis is a species of plant in the genus Sulcorebutia from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The species name goes back to the range of the plants, on the Cerro Cantar Gallo mountain.

description

Sulcorebutia cantargalloensis grows individually and only sprouts after injury with flat, spherical, glossy dark green bodies. These reach a diameter of up to 3 centimeters and a height of up to 1.5 centimeters. They have an unbranched, conical beet root up to 7 centimeters long. The 5 millimeter long and 3 millimeter wide humps are arranged in 8 to 10 spirals around the body. The narrow areoles arranged on the top of the cusps are 6 millimeters long and 1 millimeter wide at the top . The areoles covered with yellowish or whitish wool become narrower towards the bottom. The thin 14 to 20 thorns have a thickened base and are divided into different pairs of thorns. 4 to 5 pairs of thorns are aligned to the side in a comb shape, 1 pair is more or less upwards and 2 to 3 pairs are downwards. The upper thorns are 4 to 6 millimeters long, the lower ones are slightly shorter. They are smooth and colored black, black-gray or dark brown when budding. They become significantly lighter towards the bottom and stand out from the body.

The red to red-brown buds appear from the lower areoles on the plant body. The funnel-shaped flowers are 25 to 30 millimeters long and 30 to 35 millimeters in diameter. The outer petals are yellow, red or purple-pink in color. At the top and on the outside they are often red to reddish brown, purple-pink or red in color. The inner petals are colored yellow, purple-pink or red. The free-standing greenish white and about 22 millimeters long stylus is arranged at the level of the stamens or slightly above. The white colored scar has 5 to 7 scar branches.

The fruit is a red-brown pseudo-berry, which dries off when ripe and does not tear open equatorially. There are 20 to 25 seeds in the fruit.

distribution

Sulcorebutia cantargalloensis is distributed in the Bolivian department of Chuquisaca in the province of Zudáñez around the mountain Cerro Cantar Gallo at altitudes of 3600 to 3700 meters. The plants grow in rocky areas of high mountain meadows.
