Mila caespitosa is the only plant species of the monotypic genus Mila in the cactus family(Cactaceae). It was set up by Britton & Rose in 1922. The generic name is an anagram to Lima , the capital of Peru.
description
The genus includes cacti that remain small, cerebellar-like, sometimes sprouting. The thorns are strong, stiff to soft and sometimes merge into hair bristles. The short-tube flowers appear in the apex, are funnel-shaped and usually yellow to whitish. The fruits are small, juicy and thornless berries.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
The occurrence of the species extends over the western Andes in Peru at an altitude of 1000 to 2500 m.
The history of the genus is shaped by a large number of initial descriptions of supposedly independent species. The reason for this lies in the great variability of the species. In Walther Haage's work, 11 species and a few subspecies are listed. In David Hunt there are still 4 types. In the more recent literature, the genus with only one species, Mila caespitosa , is regarded as monotypical. This classification is supported by molecular biological studies.
In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Vulnerable (VU) ", d. H. listed as endangered.
