Weberbauerocereus is a genus of plants from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The botanical name of the genus honors the Prussian biologist August Weberbauer , who researched the Peruvian Andes .
description
The species of the genus Weberbauerocereus grow shrub-like to tree-like, branch at the base or above. They sometimes train tribes. The columnar shoots are erect or curved and sometimes climbing. Thorns , which are often strong, arise from the white to yellowish, woolly areoles .
The large, tubular to bell-shaped flowers are whitish, brownish pink or reddish and usually open at night. The pericarpel and the flower tube are densely covered with scales and hairs .
The spherical, greenish-purple to orange-yellow fruits have a diameter of 3 to 5 centimeters and are covered with noticeable hair. The remnants of the flowers are persistent, the pulp white. The fruits contain black, shiny seeds .
Systematics and distribution
The species of the genus Weberbauerocereus are common in Peru and the north of Chile .
The first description of the genus was made in 1942 by Curt Backeberg . The type species of the genus is Cereus fascicularis Meyen sensu Backeb. ( Weberbauerocereus weberbaueri ). The genus includes the following species:
