Discocactus ferricola is a species of the genus Discocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet describes "growing on iron".
description
Discocactus ferricola grows individually with dark green, flattened to spherical bodies that reach heights of 8 to 9 centimeters and a diameter of 20 to 25 centimeters. There are 14 ribs in which the cusps are clearly visible. The egg-shaped areoles on it are dirty white. A central spine is usually missing. If it is present, it reaches a length of 1.2 to 2.5 centimeters. The 5 to 8 radial spines are between 4.5 and 5 centimeters long and turn gray with age. The cephalium , made of white wool and dark gray bristles up to 5 centimeters long , is up to 7 centimeters high and has a diameter of 6.5 centimeters.
The flowers are up to 5.5 inches long. The elongated to club-shaped fruits are greenish cream-colored and 3 to 4 centimeters long.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Discocactus ferricola is found near the Brazilian city of Corumbá in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul . It was first described in 1975 by Albert Frederik Hendrik Buining and Arnold J. Brederoo .
Discocactus ferricola is listed in Appendix I of the Washington Convention on Endangered Species . In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Endangered (EN) ," d. H. listed as endangered.
