Discocactus placentiformis is a species of the genus Discocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae).

description

Discocactus placentiformis grows individually with dark green, flattened spherical bodies that reach heights of 3 to 3.5 centimeters and a diameter of 12 to 14 centimeters. There are 12 to 15 ribs that are up to 1.5 centimeters high and where the humps are still somewhat recognizable. There are deep furrows between the cusps. The claw-shaped, downwardly curved, often furrowed, black to reddish black thorns turn gray with age. The single protruding central spine, which can also be missing, is 1.5 to 2 centimeters long. Of the 3 to 5 radial spines, the lower ones are up to 2.5 centimeters long and the lateral ones 1.3 to 2 centimeters long. The cephalium , made of gray or white wool and black, 1.5 to 2.5 centimeters long bristles , is 2.5 to 3.5 centimeters high and reaches a diameter of 4 to 6 centimeters.

The slender funnel-shaped flowers are up to 7.5 inches long. The club-shaped, white fruits are 8 millimeters in diameter and up to 30 millimeters long.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Discocactus placentiformis is distributed in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais at altitudes of 550 to 1275 meters. It was first described as Cactus placentiformis in 1826 by Johann Georg Christian Lehmann . Karl Moritz Schumann placed them in the genus Discocactus in 1894 .

Discocactus placentiformis is listed in Appendix I of the Washington Convention on Endangered Species . In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN from 2002, she was as " Vulnerable (VU) ", d. H. classified endangered. After the list was revised in 2013, the species will be classified as " Least Concern (LC) ", i. H. listed as not endangered.
