Discocactus pseudoinsignis is a species of the genus Discocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae).

description

Discocactus pseudoinsignis grows individually with light green, flattened spherical bodies that reach heights of growth of up to 8 centimeters and diameters of up to 21 centimeters. There are 12 to 13 straight ribs where the cusps are barely visible. The strong, piercing thorns are dark reddish to black and gray with age. The majority of them are straight, but some are curved. The mostly protruding single central spine is up to one centimeter long. The 5 radial spines are between 2.5 and 3.2 inches long. One of them is directed downwards. The hemispherical cephalium , made of white wool and dark brown bristles up to 3.2 centimeters long , is up to 5 centimeters high and reaches a diameter of 9 to 10 centimeters.

The tubular to funnel-shaped flowers are up to 7.5 inches long. The club-shaped fruits are whitish to slightly pinkish white. They reach a length of 3.2 to 4.5 centimeters and a diameter of 5 to 9 millimeters.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Discocactus pseudoinsignis is found in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais at altitudes of 700 to 1200 meters. It was first described in 1991 by Nigel Paul Taylor and Daniela Cristina Zappi . It is a formal new description for a species that has long been known as Discocactus insignis Pfeiff. was known. For reasons of nomenclature, this name was no longer applicable to this species.

Discocactus pseudoinsignis is listed in Appendix I of the Washington Convention on Endangered Species . In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is it as " Endangered (EN) , d". H. classified as endangered.
