Discocactus horstii is a species of the genus Discocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The epithet of the species honors Leopoldo Horst , the discoverer of the species. The German Cactus Society , the Society of Austrian Cactus Friends and the Swiss Cactus Society voted Discocactus horstii 2016 “Cactus of the Year”.

Discocactus horstii grows individually, with brownish green, flattened spherical bodies that reach heights of growth of up to 2 centimeters and a diameter of up to 7 centimeters. The 15 to 22 round ribs are 6 to 8 millimeters high. The areoles, which are initially white felt , later bald. There are up to 8 calcareous grayish white thorns up to 7.5 millimeters long , which are bent backwards and lie against the surface of the body. The cephalium , made up of white wool and some brownish bristles up to 2 centimeters long , is up to 1.5 centimeters high and reaches a diameter of 2 centimeters.
The tubular white flowers are up to 7.5 centimeters long and 6 centimeters in diameter. The cylindrical to club-shaped, white fruits are up to 3 centimeters long and have a diameter of 4 millimeters.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Discocactus horstii is common in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais . It was first described in 1973 by Albert Frederik Hendrik Buining and Arnold J. Brederoo .
Discocactus horstii is listed in Appendix I of the Washington Convention on Endangered Species . In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN from 2002 it was called " Endangered (EN) ," d. H. classified as endangered. After the list was revised in 2013, the species will be classified as " Vulnerable (VU) ", i. H. listed as endangered.
