Echinopsis eyriesii is a species of plant in the genus Echinopsis from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The epithet of the species honors the French cactus gardener Alexander Eyries. The German Cactus Society , the Society of Austrian Cactus Friends and the Swiss Cactus Society voted Echinopsis eyriesii 2010 “Cactus of the Year”.

Echinopsis eyriesii grows singly or sprouts at the base. The spherical to short cylindrical shoots reach heights of 15 to 30 centimeters with diameters of 10 to 15 centimeters. The white to ocher colored areoles located on the 11 to 18 narrow-edged and not humped ribs are up to 1 centimeter apart. The blackish 12 to 15 thorns emerging from the areoles are hard, piercing and up to 7 millimeters long.

The long funnel-shaped, white, sometimes pink-tinged flowers appear laterally. They are 20 to 25 centimeters long and reach a diameter of 5 to 10 centimeters.

Distribution and systematics

Echinopsis eyriesii is common in the Argentine provinces of Entre Ríos (province) and Buenos Aires up to an altitude of 500 meters. The first description as Echinocactus eyriesii was published in 1830 by Pierre Jean François Turpin . Christoph Friedrich Otto first placed it in the genus Cereus as Cereus eyriesii in 1835 , before moving it to the genus Echinopsis in 1839 together with Ludwig Georg Karl Pfeiffer .
