Pachycereus marginatus is a species of the genus Pachycereus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). Spanish common names are "Chilayo" and "Órgano". The specific epithet marginatus means 'provided with a margin, rimmed'.
Pachycereus marginatus was chosen by the cactus societies of the three German-speaking countries Germany ( DKG ), Austria ( GÖK ) and Switzerland ( SKG ) as cactus of the year 2020.

Pachycereus marginatus grows tree-shaped with single or rarely branching, upright, columnar shoots and reaches heights of 3 to 4 meters with a diameter of 8 to 20 centimeters. There are four to seven protruding, broad ribs . The large areoles on it later flow together. The one to three yellowish to gray central spines are 1 to 1.5 centimeters long. The five to nine radial spines are 2 to 4 millimeters long. The flowering areoles located near the shoot tips are covered with numerous bristles up to 2 centimeters long.
The funnel-shaped, reddish flowers are 3 to 4 centimeters long. Your pericarpel and the flower tube are covered with scales, which carry wool and bristles in their armpits. The spherical fruits are more or less dry. They reach a diameter of up to 4 centimeters and are covered with slightly sloping thorns and wool.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Pachycereus marginatus is common in the Mexican states of Hidalgo , México , Guanajuato , Querétaro , Morelos , Puebla , Oaxaca , Colima , Michoacán and Guerrero . It was first described as Cereus marginatus in 1828 by Augustin-Pyrame de Candolle . Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose placed them in the genus Pachycereus in 1909 .
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is called " Data Deficient (DD) ", i. H. with insufficient data.
