Astrophytum asterias is a species of the genus Astrophytum in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet asterias means 'sea urchin' and refers to the shape of the shoots. Common names are "Sea Urchin Cactus", "Sand Dollar Cactus", "Sea Urchin Cactus" and "Star Cactus". The German Cactus Society , the Society of Austrian Cactus Friends and the Swiss Cactus Society voted Astrophytum asterias 2012 “Cactus of the Year”.

Astrophytum asterias grows with gray-green, flattened spherical bodies that have numerous tufts of hair and hardly protrude above the soil surface. They reach heights of 2 to 5 centimeters and diameters of 6 to 10 centimeters. The usually 8 (rarely 6 to 10) very low ribs are flattened and separated from each other by sharp furrows. The raised, round areoles have a diameter of 5 to 10 millimeters. There are no thorns .
The yellow flowers have a red throat, are 2 to 4 centimeters long and reach a diameter of 3 to 5 centimeters. The fruits do not open above their base.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Astrophytum asterias is found in southern Texas in the United States and in the Mexican states of Nuevo León and Tamaulipas .
The first description as Echinocactus asterias by Joseph Gerhard Zuccarini was published in 1845. Charles Lemaire placed them in the genus Astrophytum in 1868 .
Astrophytum asterias is listed in Appendix I of the Washington Convention on Endangered Species . In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is it as " Vulnerable (VU) , d". H. classified endangered.
