Cleistocactus strausii , rarelycalled silver candle cactus , is a species of plant in the genus Cleistocactus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The epithet of the species honors L. Straus (1862–1934), a German merchant and cactus lover from Bruchsal and co-founder of the German Cactus Society . The German Cactus Society, the Society of Austrian Cactus Friends and the Swiss Cactus Society voted Cleistocactus strausii 2013 “ Cactus of the Year ”.

Cleistocactus strausii grows shrubby, branching from the base with several, upright, columnar shoots and reaches heights of 1 to 3 meters. The light green shoots reach a diameter of up to 8 centimeters and are completely covered by the dense, white thorns . There are 25 to 30  ribs . The areoles on it are close together. The approximately 4 central spines are light yellow and up to 2 centimeters long. The 30 to 40 white radial spines are hair-like to bristly and 1.5 to 5 centimeters long.

The tubular, dark wine-red flowers protrude almost straight from the shoots. They are 8 to 9 inches long. The flower tube is very densely covered with silky hair. The pear-shaped to spherical, red fruits reach a diameter of up to 2 centimeters.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Cleistocactus strausii is widespread in the Bolivian Department of Tarija at altitudes of 1800 to 2600 meters. It was first described as Pilocereus strausii in 1907 by Emil Heese . Curt Backeberg placed them in the genus Cleistocactus in 1934 .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
