Leopoldo Horst (born February 16, 1918 in Estrela , Rio Grande do Sul , Brazil ; † February 3, 1987 in Arroio da Seca, Imigrante , Brazil) was an internationally known cactus collector.

Life

Leopoldo Horst was the son of a German-born peasant couple. His grandparents came from Tecklenburg / Westphalia and emigrated to South America in 1879 . Already in his youth he became interested in the Brazilian flora . At first he lived on a modest farm with his wife Melita. Horst changed his profession several times. At the end of the 1950s he was able to search several municipalities of Rio Grande do Sul for cacti on business trips and found numerous innovations. This brought him into contact with Albert Frederik Hendrik Buining and Walther Haage . In 1963 he was visited by Friedrich Ritter , who went on a few excursions with Horst and described the first Horst finds as new species. In 1964, Horst made contact with the Swiss cactus dealer Werner Uebelmann , who increased and distributed all Horst finds under the common field number "HU" (= Horst & Uebelmann) in his nursery. He undertook important trips to northern Brazil with Albert Buining in 1966, 1967, 1968, 1972 and 1974. He traveled with Werner Uebelmann between 1965 and 1988. In the late 1970s he came into close contact with Werner Rauh and Pierre Braun which he also went on excursions in Brazil. In 1983 he and Pierre Braun undertook his last major research trip of several months through the states of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catharina, Parana, Mato Grosso do Sul, Mato Grosso, Goias, Tocantins, Bahia, Minas Gerais, Esprito Santo and Rio de Janeiro.

Leopoldo Horst had two sons and a daughter. His son Kurt-Ingo Horst was often out in the field with his father and carried on the cactus collection, which still exists today as Horst Comércio de Cactus in Imigrante.
