Gymnocalycium horstii is a species of plant in the genus Gymnocalycium from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the Brazilian cactus collector Leopoldo Horst (1918–1987).
description
Gymnocalycium horstii initially grows individually and later forms groups with bright green, spherical shoots that reach heights of growth of up to 20 centimeters and the same diameter. The five to six ribs are rounded and grooved across. The usually five straight to slightly curved, yellowish white thorns are up to 3 inches long. One of them is facing downwards, the others are facing sideways.
The cream-white to light purple-pink flowers reach a length of up to 11 centimeters and the same diameter. The blue-green fruits are egg-shaped.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Gymnocalycium horstii is distributed in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul at altitudes over 300 meters.
It was first described in 1970 by Albert Frederik Hendrik Buining .
In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Endangered (EN) ," d. H. listed as endangered.
