The Church of the Most Holy Redeemer is the institutional church of the LKH University Hospital in Graz-St. Leonhard and parish church of the parish Graz-Holy Savior in the regional hospital in the dean's office Graz-Ost of the city ​​church Graz .

History and architecture

After the construction of the new hospital in St. Leonhard, it replaced the Antonius Church in Paulustorgasse, where the old city hospital was located, as the hospital church. The church building was built in Art Nouveau style according to the plans of the architects Karl Hupfer and Franz Gabrič . Originally it should have been built in the neo-Gothic style. Otto Wagner's church at Steinhof in Vienna served as a model . Construction began in 1909. The consecration of the new church to the Most Holy Savior took place on May 20, 1912 and was given by Prince-Bishop Dr. Leopold Schuster performed on the same day as the blessing of the hospital. In 1919 the church was raised to the rank of parish church, in which Dr. Matthew Winter acted as the first priest. The altarpiece comes from the academic painter Alfred v. Schrötter and the 14 pictures of the Way of the Cross, as well as the portrait of Mary, are a replica of the Italian painter Donatello . In 1982 the church received a new popular altar made of light marble. The pastoral care center for clinic staff Graz is also affiliated to the parish ; the Dominicans from Münzgraben also took over the hospital pastoral care in the LKH Graz until they moved away in 2013 .
