The island of Gulangyu ( 鼓浪嶼  /  鼓浪屿 , Gǔlàng yǔ ) or Kulangsu is part of the municipality Siming the prefecture-level city Xiamen in the Chinese province of Fujian . The name literally means drum wave island , which suggests the noise generated by the waves on the reefs in the southwest of the island. The island lives almost entirely from day trippers from the mainland. There are several parks and attractions. The island was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2017.

history

The island , which is almost two square kilometers in size, was occupied by many colonial powers throughout its history, all of which left their traces, mainly architectural ones, on the island.

In 1945, Gulangyu became one of the first four boroughs of Xiamen. In May 2003, however, it was attached to the Siming district , which is located on Xiamen Island, and now administratively forms the Gulangyu (鼓浪屿 街道) street district , an administrative unit at the municipal level.

Administrative structure

The street neighborhood Gulangyu consists of two residential communities together. These are:

  • Residential community Longtou (龙头 社区);
  • Residents Community Neicuo (内厝社区).

traffic

The island is not connected to the mainland by any bridge, but can only be reached by a short ferry ride. In addition, the island does not have an internal combustion engine so that it can be used as a vacation spot for the residents of the metropolis of Xiamen. The island is used by e-caddies, which act as smaller buses for transporting tourists and garbage trucks.

Culture

In addition to its official name, Gulangyu is also known throughout China as the Piano Island ( 鋼琴 之 島  /  钢琴 之 岛 ), because it has the highest piano density per capita in China. Gulangyu Island also has the only piano museum in China.

Parks

The Haoyue -Park (皓月公园Haoyue Gongyuan) was built to the Chinese national hero Zheng Chenggong to worship. It also stands in the form of a 16-meter high granite statue in Haoyue Park.

The Shuzhuang -Park (菽庄花园) was built in the style of a classical Chinese garden in 1913, it housed the private villa of a wealthy Taiwanese businessman and was converted into a public park after the establishment of the People's Republic.
