World Heritage Criteria

Overall, four of the criteria for cultural heritage apply to the Historic Center of Macau :

Criterion ii

As a meeting place, Macau has been an exchange of human values in culture, science, technology and art history for centuries. The European influences in China and the cooperation between Chinese and Portuguese authorities are special examples of this.

Criterion iii

For over 400 years, Macau was an important place for European traders and missionaries, making it the place with the oldest and longest tradition of exchanges between the West and China. The effects of the mixing of different cultures can still be seen in the historic old town today.

Criterion iv

In Macau, the development of the encounters between East and West can be seen in architecture. A series of public squares and buildings connect the old Chinese port with the Portuguese city.

Criterion vi

Many of the exchange processes at the various levels of culture, science and technology have advanced important social processes in China and ultimately led to the end of the feudal system and the establishment of a republic in the modern sense.
