history

A Franciscan monastery was founded in 1316 and destroyed in 1532. 1655 was the owner of the locken house Count Franz III. Nádasdy donated the construction of the Augustinian Hermit Monastery and the baroque parish church. The execution was carried out from the Italian master mason Pietro Orsolini from Siena or Milan. The foundation stone was laid on July 2, 1656. After a lengthy interruption in construction due to the cracks in the side walls, the church building was completed in 1669 and consecrated on September 15.

architecture

Interior to the choir, niche chapels in the slope

The early baroque church has an elongated Greek cross plan with an unusually large central space. At the corners of the cross there are four semicircular niche chapels in the recessed incline, which protrude from the facade to the north and are not visible to the south in the monastery wall. The choir made a straight ending. Behind it stands the transverse sacristy. A wide flight of stairs leads to the three-storey gable facade with two stone niche figures and the double coat of arms Nádasdy - Esterházy . A four-story tower with an onion helmet is built to the south. The church in the Emporenjoch and Chorjoch is vaulted with barrels with stitch caps, the barrel vault rises towards the middle by the niche chapels, and in the middle yoke there is a groin vault. In the middle yoke there are short transverse arms with a shield arch. The nave has a mighty, depressed, cranked main cornice. The Ionic pilaster capitals have stucco decoration. The gallery above a barrel vault has a straight parapet and shows the inscription Erectum 1656 Renovatum 1913 . The wall painting of the church shows a pseudo-plastic decoration on the belts and vaults and shows two figural ceiling paintings from 1913. Under the gallery on the left is the Antonius Chapel with a remarkable wrought iron grille from around 1700.

Furnishing

The high altar from 1656 forms a frontal three-storey structure over the entire choir wall. The central altarpiece shows the holy hermits Paulus and Antonius, painted by Georg Kéry (1675). The figures of Saints Nicholas of Bari and Nicholas of Tolentino each stand between Corinthian columns above the sacrificial passage portals . The figures of the holy kings Stephen and Ladislaus and angels stand above the cornice. On the top are the figures Barbara, Katharina and Elisabeth and the double coat of arms Nádasdy-Esterházy. Gilded ornaments are ingredients of the Rococo. The free-standing tabernacle with the miraculous image of Mother of Good Counsel with angel figures is from the 3rd quarter of the 18th century.

The black side altars with acanthus-adorned top in the eastern niches bear two female figures of saints around 1660 on the left and the figures of Joachim and Anna around 1675 on the right. The side altars in the western niches show the oil painting Donatus from 1723 and figures of religious saints on the left and a sculptural group of saints above , and on the right the figures Georg and Florian with the altarpiece Johannes Nepomuk. The side altar in the north cross arm has a cafeteria with reliquaries and a stucco decoration over the entire wall with the oil painting Mariae as Regina Hungariae from 1912. The side altar in the south cross arm bears a plastic crucifixion group from the 3rd quarter of the 17th century, the frame and the painted landscape is from the end of the 19th century.

The pulpit from the 3rd quarter of the 18th century bears the seated figures of Moses and John the Baptist on the basket and Jonas and the whale as a relief. On the back wall is the relief sower. On the cover are three female figures Faith Love Hope and rich rococo ornamentation.

Two baroque figures Rochus and Sebastian hang on the pillars of the choir. Two oil paintings from the third quarter of the 17th century above the sacristy show Saints Sebastian and Catherine, allegedly with the features of Franz Nádasdy and Anna Juliana Esterházy. The confessional is marked 1706.

organ

In 2003 the parish church received a new organ built by Rieger Orgelbau with 35 stops on two manuals and a pedal from the donor Countess Elisabeth von Enzenberg- Esterházy . It was Sh'ma Israel on parchment written by Johana Baron, who lives in London since 1938, and was born in 1914 as Jonka ram in Lockenhaus deposited, reminiscent of the displaced and annihilated Jews of Lockenhaus. With organist Wolfgang Horvath , in addition to the ORGELockenhaus music festival, there are also regular concerts with Musica Sacra Lockenhaus , organ tours, children's programs and festival services.

Bells

One bell is marked 1539. Balthasar Herold cast a bell in Vienna in 1669.

crypt

Tomb in the crypt

Below the gallery on the right is the exit to the burial place of the Nádasdy and Draskovich families in the lower church, together with the graves of the former Augustinian hermits. Franz III in particular is among the family members buried here . To highlight Nádasdy . The low, three-aisled room has a groin vault and shows the wall painting Dance of Death from 1772 in the choir. The altar shows a picture from 1704 of the miraculous Mary according to the fountain legend.
