The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ålesund is a church of the Norwegian Church in the city of Ålesund . It is located in downtown Ålesund on Aspegata on the island of Aspøy .

Architecture and history

A first church in Ålesund was consecrated in 1855. However, it burned down in the Ålesund town fire in 1904. The current church was built according to plans by the Biri architect Sverre Knutsen . He prevailed against 62 other competition entries in a competition with his design under the motto Ave Maria . However, the design, which was influenced by the Middle Ages and the Norwegian church building tradition, was changed. In particular, the windows were made larger to give the interior more light.

The foundation stone was laid in the summer of 1906 by King Haakon VII , the inauguration followed in September 1909. The church was designed in the arched style with a facade made of natural stones . The stones used were delivered from Eide in Nordmøre . The church tower is located southwest of the nave.

In the interior of the church there is an altar portrait carved from linden wood by the sculptor Nicolai Meijdell and framed from pine wood. The image, which was already put up for the inauguration in the church, shows Jesus in the middle in prayer in the garden of Gethsemane. On the one hand the disciples and on the other hand Judas are shown.

The font in the church is based on a design by the architect Knutsen and was made from Carrara marble . The chandeliers in the choir are also based on designs by the architect.

There are frescoes in the choir of the church . They were created by Enevold Thømt between 1918 and 1928 . He also created the stained glass added in 1946 in the windows of the nave. On the southern side, the fishing of St. Peters and thus also the fishing, which is also economically important for the city, is shown. In addition, the disciples are shown in the storm. On the north side there is the Good Samaritan, the wedding of the king's son and the wise and foolish virgins.

The church also has other stained glass. One of the paintings on the back wall shows Jesus on the cross and the expulsion of people from paradise. The counterpart is the heavenly paradise, in which two people have just arrived. The entire picture is taken up by a tree of life that bears twelve different fruits.

A stained glass behind the organ is a gift from the German Kaiser Wilhelm II for the dedication of the church. In the painting, both the German eagle and Saint Olav are depicted in the Ålesund city arms. The depiction symbolizes the emperor's help in rebuilding the city after the city fire of 1904.

In the vault of the choir, the dove can be seen as a symbol of the Holy Spirit. In addition, the Trinity is symbolically represented and JAHVE can be read as the name of God. The representation is framed with ornaments and symbolic images, with the images on the right and left corresponding: Baptism - Last Supper, Prayer - Thanks, Fight - Victory, Mark the Lion - Luke the Ox, Death - Life, Matthew the symbol of man - St. John's symbol of the eagle. Above it is the monogram of Christ .

To the right of the pulpit is a crucifix created in 1937 by the sculptor Ambrosia Tønnessen . It commemorates the artist's father, the skipper Abraham Tønnessen . The model of the sailing ship Thalatta hangs from the ceiling of the nave . It is a gift from Captain Alfred Viken and his wife.

The church's current organ dates from 1945 and was made by the organ builder Jørgensen . It was a gift from Consul A. Holm and his wife Gunvor . The couple also donated five of the stained glass in the nave and in 1946 the chandelier located there . In 2009 the organ was restored by the Austrian organ builder Rieger . The organ now has 93 registers, 8,000 pipes and 5 manuals. The church also has a carillon with 39 bells.

In the vestibule there is an image of Christ created by Oddvar Straume . He also put together the stained glass in the sacristy and in all door panels. The pictures were created by the Ålesund glazier Ellingsen . On the back wall of the sacristy is a picture created by Jonas Peson .

There is also a plaque commemorating the victims of Ålesund during the Second World War in the vestibule . To the east of the church is the De falne til minne memorial, commemorating those who fell in World War II .
