Parish church Aigen in the Mühlkreis
The parish church of Aigen im Mühlkreis dominates the southern end of the market square in Aigen im Mühlkreis in the municipality of Aigen-Schlägl in the Rohrbach district in the upper Mühlviertel in Upper Austria . The Roman Catholic parish church consecrated to St. John the Evangelist - incorporated into Schlägl Abbey - belongs to the Altenfelden dean's office in the Linz diocese . The church building is under monument protection ( list entry ).
history
The parish was mentioned in a document in 1411. The late Gothic previous building, built from 1484 to 1529, suffered destruction from fires in 1802 and 1852. From 1897 to 1901 the church was rebuilt according to the plans of the architect Raimund Jeblinger , whereby the Gothic west tower, which was restored in 1856, was preserved. In 1991 it was completely restored.
architecture
The church is a remarkable late historical sacral building in Upper Austria with neo-Gothic and some neo-Romanesque forms. The three-aisled, five-bay relay hall has a central three-eighth end as a choir. The wide, heavily raised central nave has a barrel vault with applied cross ribs over octagonal pillars and wide dividing arches . The narrow aisles have ribbed vaults over pillars. The west facade with the central Gothic tower is roughly in the axis of the market square. In the visible base, the tower has exposed brick cladding with a row of blind arcades and closes above a bell storey with a sound window and clock with pointed gables and a pointed helmet.
The massive, strongly structured exterior has granite stone surfaces and exposed brick elements and stepped buttresses . The central nave is under a hipped roof, the side aisles have pent roofs, and in the east above the choir is a roof turret. The west facade is two-storey, the central portal with a wide profiled reveal and a squat pointed arch is gabled, above are neo-Gothic group windows, to the side of the central portal are four segmented arched portals and above it, windows with segmented arched roofs. The west facade closes with cornices with serrated friezes and arched friezes. The side facades have broad group windows over a partially windowed base zone and two portals on each side with a central niche as a three-gable group. Over the portal zones and the east yoke are facade gables of different heights. The choir has blind arcades in the attic zone and is flanked by two stair towers.
The three-aisled one-bay west gallery in neo-Romanesque forms has a wooden beam ceiling. The two sacristies, each with two segment arched doors, are in the side aisle area of the easternmost yoke and have wooden beam ceilings. The tower has stone barrel vaults and a lancet barrel vault on the bell floor.
The stained glass windows in the choir from 1900 show in the choir head Johannes Evangelist on Patmos and to the side architectural representations and coats of arms from the Schlägl monastery and the Schlägl community and in the round windows angels and above the saints Maximilian and Florian as the diocese and state patron, the evangelist symbol eagle and in the east galleries Ornamental window. The nave windows show symbols of faith and ornaments, south in the second yoke the mission of the Holy Spirit, acceptance into heaven, coronation of Mary, in the third and fourth yoke Passion symbols, north in the second yoke faith, hope and love, in the third yoke marriage, in the fourth yoke Ordination. Decorative vault paintings from 1901 were reconstructed during the 1991 restoration.
Furnishing
The furnishings from 1901 to 1912 are remarkably uniform and neo-Gothic.
The organ has a neo-Gothic, architecturally structured case with triangular gables, pinnacles and finials of the previous organ by Johann Lachmayr (1910). The organ work with a romantic-symphonic sound concept with two manuals and 33 registers was created by Rieger Orgelbau (1997).
