The Redemptorist Church is a Roman Catholic church building in the 17th district of Hernals in Vienna . It is consecrated to Mary, Mother of Perpetual Help .

Location and architecture

The neo-Gothic pseudo - basilica by the architect Richard Jordan is located on Clemens-Hofbauer-Platz in the Hernals district . Its southern front with the large church tower is oriented towards the square. The three-storey convent and the monastery garden are connected to the north . The church is built using exposed brick and is enclosed by side altars and extensions. Sandstone reliefs can be found above the portals of the porch. In the middle, the mother of constant help with Saint Alfonso Maria de Ligurori, the founder of the Redemptorist order and Saint Clemens Maria Hofbauer, as well as the coat of arms of the Redemptorist order. The statues of St. Theresa of Avila, the Archangel Michael, St. Leopold and Maria Magdalena stand on the buttresses. Tympanum reliefs and statues are the work of the sculptor Rochus Haas . He also made the Pietà in the grotto at the foot of the tower.

The Redemptorist Church is a listed building ( list entry ). Drawings with Richard Jordan's designs for the Redemptorist Church and the Gersthof parish church were presented at the Paris World Exhibition in 1900 . From the point of view of art and architectural history, the neo-Gothic furnishings and furnishings that have been preserved from the time of construction are of particular importance. The high altar is the work of the Redemptorist brother Maximilian Schmalzl , who also created the Stations of the Cross. The altar in the tower chapel is consecrated to Alfonso Maria de Liguori, the one in the new chapel is dedicated to Klemens Maria Hofbauer , also a Redemptorist and patron saint of Vienna. In the church there is a copy of the miraculous image of Our Lady of Perpetual Help , the original of which is kept in the Church of Sant'Alfonso all'Esquilino in Rome . The icon Madonna of the Lovers from the 18th century originally comes from the St. Elisabeth Hospital in Landstrasse . A St. Andrew's cross from the third quarter of the 18th century is attributed to the circle of the Baroque sculptor Josef Stammel . The three-aisled interior of the Redemptorist Church is decorated in green and gold tones.

history

The church was built between 1886 and 1889 as a Redemptorist monastery church. In 1937 she was elevated to a parish church . The Marienpfarre, located in the Redemptorist Church, is today one of four parishes in the city ​​dean's office 17 .

The building was damaged in 1944/45 by bombing raids during World War II . The church tower was renovated in 1954, followed by repair work and the purchase of the current bells in 1957. In 1974 the interior was restored. When the Rieger company built the new organ in 1983, parts of the old organ from 1891 were used.
