The St. Anna Chapel is a Roman Catholic chapel in the Dornbach part of Vienna's 17th district of Hernals . It is consecrated to St. Anna .

Location and architecture

The St. Anna Chapel has an unusual location in the middle of a rail loop at the terminus of tram line 43. In its current form, it is a neo-baroque building, even if it goes back to an older predecessor. To the right of the portal is a stone crucifix made by the sculptor Pietro Silvestro de Caradea around 1720. In a niche on the south facade there is a group of figures Anna selbdritt , which probably dates from the 16th century.

In the chapel there are four baroque canvases with depictions of saints and the crucifixion of Christ as well as four baroque figures. The stained glass on the windows with depictions of saints date from 1909. The image of the Holy Tribe at the altar is dated to 1717. A wax relief from the 18th century depicting Saints Anna and Mary is kept in a glass shrine . The stone sacrificial box dates from 1739.

The St. Anna Chapel is a listed building ( list entry ).

history

In 1713, Johann Carl Bartolotti Freiherr von Partenfeld , to whom the Palais Bartolotti-Partenfeld also commemorates in Vienna , donated a wooden votive chapel in place of today's St. Anna chapel . This was replaced by a stone building in 1717 and enlarged in 1773. In 1884 the tower was raised. Due to dilapidation, the chapel was closed in 1905 and demolished in 1906 because it was a traffic obstacle on Dornbacher Strasse.

Between 1908 and 1910, the St. Anna Chapel was rebuilt according to plans by the architect Johann Steinmetz, with it now facing north. In front of the chapel, the "Association of Gardeners and Gardening Friends in Dornbach and the Surrounding Area" had an imperial oak planted in 1910 on the occasion of the 80th birthday of Emperor Franz Joseph I , a memorial stone commemorating this.

The St. Anna Chapel belongs to the Roman Catholic parish Dornbach (with seat in the parish church Dornbach ). The chapel is also a preaching station for the Protestant parish AB Währing (based in the Luther Church ).
