The Roman Catholic parish church Sulzberg is located in the Bregenzerwald community Sulzberg in the Bregenz district in Vorarlberg . It is consecrated to St. Laurentius and belongs to the deanery of Vorderwald-Kleinwalsertal in the diocese of Feldkirch . The building is a listed building .

history

In 1396 a priest is mentioned in Sulzberg, in 1427 a parish church. From 1828 to 1829 the nave was converted and expanded according to plans by Alois Negrelli von Moldelbe . It was consecrated in 1833. Restorations took place from 1875 to 1882 and 1950.

Church exterior

The choir and the bell tower base of the late Gothic church and the octagonal structure with round-arched sound openings and onion helmet from the end of the 18th century have been preserved. The new church building is illuminated through three semicircular windows on the nave sides and two on the west side. The wide hall has a hipped roof that continues northeast to the tower and over the choir and sacristy. The three-axis west facade with the main portal is structured by pilasters , beams and triangular gables.

Church interior

The nave, a wide hall with long sides structured by double pilaster strips and a flat-arched east wall opens to the choir with a round-arched triumphal arch . A segmented arch barrel, divided by three double straps, arches over the circumferential, cranked beams of the nave . The choir with a polygonal end and a flat barrel vault has arched windows. In the north wall there is a gothic pointed arch portal with beveled walls, in the south wall a rectangular portal with an iron plate door.

The ceiling paintings are by Johann Kärle (1882): in the choir the triumph of the church , in the nave, image fields with seven scenes from the life of Christ, as a typological reference to the resurrection , Jonas and Samson , on the side six half-length portraits of prophets and under the organ gallery Christ as the Good Shepherd . The mural above the triumphal arch depicting the Ascension of Christ is inscribed with (Hans) Strobl 1950.

Furnishing

The neo-Romanesque high altar dates from 1876 based on a plan by Josef Anton Müller. In the gable of the ciborium, Christ with Laurentius and Katharina and to the side Gallus and Kassian are depicted. The inner side altars from 1882 bear the figure of Maria Immaculata from the Mayersche Kunstanstalt in Munich on the left and the figure of Josef by Franz Schmalzl on the right. The outer side altars from 1862 show Katharina on the left and Laurentius on the right, painted in 1832 by L. Caspar Weiß.

The pulpit from 1882 has the four evangelists on the basket and the prophets on the sound cover. The relief of the Sermon on the Mount on the back wall of the pulpit was created by the sculptor Franz Xaver Renn in 1830. The crucifix is ​​from 1880, the wrought iron candlesticks above the apostles' crosses from 1830.

The organ was built by Anton Behmann in 1895 . Hans von Malin cast a bell in 1549.
