Jonas is a male given name and family name .

Origin and meaning

The Hebrew version of the name means dove and originally comes from the Greek word οιωνός for sign . In ancient Greece, it was believed that birds were sent to people as symbols of the gods. It is therefore assumed that the name Jonas stands for a peaceful being. The biblical version of the name includes the Hebrew meaning, but also includes the meaning destroyer and oppressor . As a variant of Jonah, the name can also be used as an achievement and gift from God .

The first name Jonas was very rarely given in Germany before 1970. The name has been used increasingly since 1970 and has been one of the most common male first names in the German-speaking area since the 1980s. From 2000 to 2005, the first name was always in the 6th to 10th place of the most popular first names for male newborns in Germany. The first name is also very common in Scandinavia .
