Maria Jonas

Maria Jonas (born February 1, 1940 in Vienna , † September 25, 2018 ) was an Austrian feminist .

Life

Maria Jonas came from a Jewish family who immigrated from Bohemia . She had never met her father because he was murdered by the Nazis before she was born. Shortly after she was born, her mother hid her in the country with foster parents . She lived with this family without love until she was 5 years old. Her mother died when she was 14 years old. She attended elementary and middle school in Vienna, which she graduated with the Matura in 1958 . After completing her language studies at the University of Vienna, she worked as a secretary and later in a political position.

From 1963 to 1967 she was employed in the SPÖ's International Secretariat . She then worked as a journalist and cultural critic for a Viennese daily newspaper until 1969. She then worked as a secretary in the office of the Socialist Women's International in London until 1971 and then as a personal assistant in private industry in Vienna until 1976. From 1976 to 1985 she worked in the SPÖ's International Secretariat. Your party work related to the areas of women's politics, guest workers and political refugees. From November 1985 to June 1986 she was the Executive Secretary General of the Socialist Women's International (SFI). She was elected General Secretary in 1986 and re-elected in 1989 and 1992. She left this position in 1995. She was retired on February 1, 2000.

From July 1996 to June 1999 she was an elected board member of the UN Women's Research and Training Institute (INSTRAW) and took part as an expert in the Austrian delegation to the sessions of the UN Women's Status Commission in 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000.

She was a co-initiator of the women's referendum and a member of the Independent Women's Forum. Jonas was a co-founder of the first women's shelter in Vienna.

From April 1999 to November 2003 she was elected chairwoman of the Vienna NGO Committee on the Status of Women . As such, she represented the committee in the Beijing + 5 process in 2000.

Jonas died on September 25, 2018 at the age of 78.
