Doddabetta

The 2637 m high Doddabetta is the highest point in the Nilgiri Mountains in southern India . In its vicinity there are other peaks with heights of over 2000 m ( Kolaribetta : 2630 m; Hecuba : 2375 m; Kattadadu : 2418 m; Kulkudi : 2439 m).

location

The Doddabetta is located about 9 km (driving distance) southeast of Udagamandalam , better known as Ooty , a former British hill station , which today - especially in the summer months - is a popular excursion destination with Indians. The best way to get to Ooty is by taking the Nilgiri Mountain Railway , which has been recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1999 - together with other mountain railways in India . There are hiking trails from here, but taxis and motor rickshas also drive to Doddabetta.

description

The originally wooded summit plateau of the Doddabetta is partly artificially flattened, paved and decorated with flower beds. There are numerous tea rooms and souvenir stands here. There is a clear view of the surrounding landscape only on a few days and then mostly in the early morning hours; otherwise clouds and light haze and fog cloud the view.
