Rudolf Jonas (born July 23, 1907 , † January 23, 1991 in Stralsund ) was a German marine aquarist .

Jonas learned the trade of a locksmith . After the end of the Second World War , he came from Liberec (then Reichenberg) to Stralsund, where he initially helped set up the natural history museum (today: German Maritime Museum) as a technical assistant at Otto Dibbelt's side .

The autodidact became head of the aquarium in the natural history museum. He personally took part in numerous trips on which marine animals were caught for the Stralsund aquariums. In 1956, together with the then museum director Sonnfried Streicher, he developed the concept for a seawater aquarium, which was opened in 1957 as the first (and only) of its kind in what was then the GDR . His extensive knowledge of marine fauna and species as well as his aquarium experience made him a recognized expert in marine aquaristics, even beyond the borders of the GDR.

Rudolf Jonas died in Stralsund in 1991 at the age of 83.
