Sonnfried Streicher

Sonnfried Streicher (* 1929 in Crimmitschau ) is a German marine biologist . For 40 years he was director of the German Maritime Museum in the Hanseatic city of Stralsund .

Life

Streicher studied biology at the University of Leipzig until 1954 and was then deputy director of the Natural History Museum in Leipzig until 1956 . He was also a biology lecturer at the college for local museums in Köthen .

Then, after the death of the founder Otto Dibbelt , he took over the management of the Nature Museum in Stralsund. He was instrumental in the rebuilding of the facility, now conceived as a marine museum, to ultimately become the most visited museum of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) and Northern Germany, and in 1994 in the successful transfer of the hitherto municipal museum to the “Stiftung Deutsches Meeresmuseum”. He also took part in numerous research trips organized by the Marine Museum. Streicher managed the German Oceanographic Museum until August 31, 1995. Harald Benke was his successor .

As the district nature conservation officer in the Rostock district, Streicher actively campaigned for nature and environmental protection. From 1955 to 1990, with short interruptions, he was chairman of the specialist group or the section of natural science museums and also a member of the GDR Museum Council. He headed the specialist group for the profiling of natural science museums.

In 1986, Sonnfried Streicher received his doctorate in the field of museology for natural science museums.

Streicher was editor of numerous volumes of the series of publications of the German Oceanographic Museum with the title “Sea and Museum”, founder and publisher of the series of publications “Contributions of the District Natural History Museum Stralsund” and “Nature and Nature Conservation in Mecklenburg”.
