Harald Benke (born October 2, 1955 in Szczawno-Zdrój (Bad Salzbrunn), Poland ) is a German marine biologist and has been director of the German Marine Museum in the Hanseatic city of Stralsund since 1995 .

Life

Benke studied biology at Bonn University from 1976 to 1983 and did his doctorate on the subject of "Osteological and functional morphological investigations on the forelegs of whales and dolphins (Cetacea)".

From 1990 to 1994 he was a research assistant at the Kiel University branch , the West Coast Research and Technology Center in Büsum . Here he coordinated the project of the Federal Environment Ministry "Investigations into the population, health status and migration of small whales in German waters" and the joint project of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research "Investigations on small cetaceans as a basis for monitoring". From 1994 to 1995 he was a research assistant in the State Office for the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park in Tönning .

On September 1, 1995, Harald Benke succeeded Sonnfried Streicher as director of the German Maritime Museum in Stralsund. In the winter semester 1999/2000 he had a teaching position at the University of Rostock for the course "Marine Mammals / Marine Zoology".

Benke was a contact person and board member of the European Cetacean Society (ECS), member of the Science Committee of the International Whaling Commission (IWC), member of the Consultative Committee of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES), member and for three years Chairman of the Marine Mammals Committee of ICES. He is also a member of the Working Group on Marine Mammal Habitats of the ICES and a full member of the German Scientific Commission for Marine Research (DWK) .

The handover to his successor is planned for August 1, 2021.

Awards

In 2006, Benke was awarded the Seewart Medal for outstanding achievements in shipping and the sea "for creating an interface between science and knowledge transfer".
