Norman G. Thomas

Norman Gene Thomas (born May 1, 1930 in Alamosa , Colorado , † May 19, 2020 ) was an American astronomer .

Thomas worked at the Lowell Observatory and used a blink comparator . He worked with Robert Burnham, Jr. , the author of the famous three volume Celestial Handbook .

Thomas discovered 55  asteroids , among them the Apollo asteroids (4544) Xanthus and (4581) Asclepius and the Cupid asteroid (3352) McAuliffe .

The main belt asteroid (2555) Thomas was named after him, the asteroid (2612) Kathryn after his daughter and the asteroid (2683) Brian after his eldest son. The asteroid (2684) Douglas is named after his brother Douglas B. Thomas , who was a physicist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (then: National Bureau of Standards ).

The asteroid of the inner main belt (2764) Moeller discovered by him is named after his mother Sonia Louise Moeller-Thomas . The main inner belt asteroid (2779) he discovered was named after his wife Maryanna Ruth Thomas . She determined the positions of comets and asteroids in the 1960s as part of the program initiated by Elizabeth Roemer , after whom the asteroid (1657) Roemera was named.

The central central belt asteroid (2933) Amber discovered by him is named after his grandmother Amber Marie Baltutis .
