(4544) Xanthus is a near-Earth asteroid of the Apollo type , which was discovered on March 31, 1989 by the American astronomers Henry E. Holt and Norman G. Thomas at the Palomar Observatory .

The asteroid was named after another name for the Greek god Apollo .
