The West Coast Research and Technology Center ( FTZ West Coast ) is a research center of the Christian-Albrechts-Universität Kiel located in Büsum , Dithmarschen district .

In the center, founded in 1988, 40 employees work on interdisciplinary, applied and regionally specific research in the Wadden Sea and the adjacent coastal zone. The employees work in six research areas:

  • CORELAB - Coastal Modeling Group
  • CORELAB - Remote Sensing Systems Group
  • ECOLAB - Marine Animal Ecology Group
  • ECOLAB - Coastal Ecosystems Group
  • GEOLAB - Coastal Geosciences Group
  • GEOLAB - Marine Measurement Technology Group

Research into coastal and environmental protection is of particular importance . In addition to laboratories, the center also has a research ship, the Egidora . The Egidora is a catamaran that is 15 m long and 6 m wide. The ship is made of particularly resistant, glass fiber reinforced plastic. The costs amounted to 950,000 euros and were funded equally by the state of Schleswig-Holstein and the German Research Foundation.
