Maironis , actually Jonas Mačiulis (born October 21 July / November 2,  1862 greg. In Pasandravys near Raseiniai , † June 28, 1932 in Kaunas ) was Lithuanian national poet and Catholic theologian, professor at the University of Lithuania ( Vytautas Magnus University Kaunas ).

Life

Jonas Mačiulis graduated from the school in Kaunas and went after successful completion of the University of Kiev in order there literature to study, but returned in 1884, after only one year, to Kaunas back to enter a seminary. He later became an active member of the Lithuanian national movement.

His work reflects the bond with the history, language, landscape and people of Lithuania. His tomb on the south wall of Kaunas Cathedral is a national memorial.

The Maironis Museum in Kaunas, the central literary museum in Lithuania, is named after him. It collects and preserves the evidence of Lithuanian literature from its beginnings to the present.
