Rudolf Jonas (born March 31, 1909 in Vienna , † February 5, 1962 in Vienna) was an Austrian pediatrician , travel writer, co-founder and first chairman of the Austrian Himalayan Society.

biography

Rudolf Jonas, whose family from Moravia was of Czech origin, studied medicine at the University of Vienna between 1927 and 1933 . He received his training at the General Hospital of the City of Vienna , the Divine Savior Hospital and the Mautner Markhof Children's Hospital . In 1939 he became senior physician in the hospital of the city of Klosterneuburg and in 1946 primary in the surgical department at Mautner Markhof'schen Children's Hospital in Erdberg (Vienna) .

As a specialist in surgery, he also ran his own practice.

In 1945 he became a member of the Socialist Medical Association . In 1955 he was elected its chairman. He held this position until 1958 and then remained a member of the board.

As part of the Austrian Tourist Club , he was chairman of the Academic Mountain and Skiing Community section and, in this role, took part in preliminary discussions for the establishment of the Austrian Himalayan Society, the founder of which he is often referred to.

According to research conducted by him in 1935 Iceland expedition, in the first one crossing the Vatnajokull - Glacier succeeded, he was in 1938 as a physician member of a German expedition to the Garhwal Himalaya , led by Rudolf Schwarz Gruber .

In 1954 he was a member of the first expedition organized by the Austrian Himalayan Society in the dual function of expedition leader and doctor. The main objectives were to climb the Saipal and explore the access points to the Api and Nampa mountains .

Rudolf Jonas, who was buried in the Döblinger Friedhof on February 9, 1962 , was the father of a son and a daughter and the brother of Franz Jonas .
