Wolfgang Jonas (design theorist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wolfgang Jonas (born May 15, 1953 in Gummersbach ) is a German design theorist and shipbuilding engineer with a focus on design research and applied philosophy. From 2010 until his retirement he was professor of design science and from 2015 to 2018 headed the master's program in Transformation Design, which he helped develop, at the Braunschweig University of Art .

Jonas is involved in teaching, countless scientific articles, participation and organization of conferences, and consulting activities on the further development of design science concepts, in particular on the topics of design methodology, systemic and scenario-based approaches, research through design (RTD) and transformation design .

biography

Jonas completed his shipbuilding studies at the Technical University of Berlin from 1971 to 1976 . During his studies he worked as a teaching assistant at the Institute for Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, where he worked as an assistant in CAD research projects up to and including 1984.

1977-78 he taught numerical mathematics and problem-oriented programming at the Technical University of Applied Sciences Berlin (today: Beuth University of Applied Sciences Berlin ). In the same year he completed a postgraduate course in CAD and computer graphics at the TU Berlin . In 1983 he did his doctorate on the computer-aided shape optimization of flow bodies and worked until 1987 as a consultant in the field of CAD for companies in the automotive industry and the German Institute for Standardization ( DIN ).

From 1988 he devoted himself increasingly to design work and research on theories of computer-based design. Until 1992 he was a research assistant at the UdK Berlin (then Hochschule der Künste Berlin), where he taught CAD and computer graphics. In 1992 he switched to the design faculty of the Bergische Universität in Wuppertal and became a research assistant to Siegfried Maser . Jonas taught concept and system design and did research on systems theory and design. After his habilitation in early 1994, he took over the professorship for process design at Burg Giebichtenstein University of Art and Design in Halle, which he held until 2001.

In 2001 he was appointed to the Bremen University of the Arts , where he worked as a professor for design theory at the Institute for Integrated Design. From 2005 to 2010 he moved to Kassel as a professor of design theory at the Kassel Art College.

In 2010 he moved to the Institute for Transportation Design at the University of Fine Arts Braunschweig as a professor of design science and also took over its management. There he was involved in the development of the Master’s degree in Transformation Design, which he took over when it was founded in 2015.
