Peter Jonas (physiologist)

Peter Jonas (born May 10, 1961 in Darmstadt ) is a German physician and professor of neurophysiology . In 2006 he received the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize .

Career

After graduating from high school in 1980, Peter Jonas began studying medicine at the University of Giessen . He then did his community service in 1987 and 1988, before becoming a research assistant at the Physiological Institute of the University of Giessen for a year. In 1990 he moved to the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research in Heidelberg . In 1992 he completed his habilitation at the university there.

In 1994 he became professor of physiology at the Technical University of Munich and was director of the physiological institute at the Albert Ludwigs University of Freiburg from 1995 to 2010 . He has been a professor at IST Austria since 2010 .

Peter Jonas is married and has two children.

Peter Jonas works in brain research and deals with the communication of brain cells. His work is essentially based on the findings of Erwin Neher . Jonas hopes that his research will give him a better understanding of the higher functions of the brain, such as thinking .
