Michael Jonas

Michael Jonas (born November 1974 in Aurich ) is a German historian . He is a private lecturer and professor at the Helmut Schmidt University in Hamburg .

Life

Jonas comes from East Frisia . After graduating from high school , he studied medieval, modern and modern history as well as Scandinavian studies at the Humboldt University in Berlin . In the late 1990s he continued his studies at the History Institute of the University of Helsinki , where he in 2009 with a dissertation on the German-Finnish relations in the Second World War to Dr. phil. received his doctorate. His work, published by Verlag Ferdinand Schöningh in 2011 , is sometimes considered a standard work on the alliance policy of the two states.

He then became a research assistant at the Professorship for Modern History ( Bernd Wegner ) at the Helmut Schmidt University. The cumulative habilitation followed in 2016 (habilitation thesis: Big Politics, Small States: Studies on International Relations in the Age of World Wars ) and the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences was awarded the license to teach in the field of modern and contemporary history. He was also appointed Docent of European History by the University of Helsinki. In 2010 he was a Visiting Research Fellow at the Changing Character of War Program of the Pembroke College of Oxford University . He is also involved as a visiting lecturer in the master’s program in War Studies at the School of Humanities at the University of Glasgow . From the retirement of Bernd Wegner to the appointment of Marcus M. Payk , the private lecturer at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences represented the professorship for Modern History, taking Western Europe into account.

His main research interests include a. the history of international relations and the new history of diplomacy.
