St. Jodok, Ravensburg

The St. Jodok Church is a Roman Catholic church building in the lower town of Ravensburg .

Building history

The parish church of St. Jodok was built in 1385 as a three-aisled basilica ; under canon law it was subordinate to the Weißenau monastery. In the 15th century, a sacristy was added to the unplastered building on the south side . Until the 19th century, St. Jodok was surrounded by a cemetery , the remains of which have been preserved. Most of the interior is from the period after 1400.

In 2018 the church was badly damaged by arson . In 2019 the church was reopened with a new space and light concept based on plans by the architect Jürgen Hildebrand (Friedrichshafen).

Furnishing

The special furnishings include sandstone consoles to the right and left of the choir arch with busts of angels from around 1480; On the consoles there are representations of Maria and Johannes as wooden sculptures, which also date from around 1480.

In the choir there is a sacrament house with the Coronation of the Virgin Mary from 1450.

A medieval fresco in the choir shows Christ with everyday tools. This representation is also called the holiday Christ and should exhort to keep Sundays and holidays holy.

The history of the organs in St. Jodok can be traced back to 1611. Today's organ was built in 1993 by the organ building company Rieger (Schwarzach) with 38 registers on three manuals and a pedal . The Rückpositiv of Reiser's predecessor organ from 1947 was used as a choir organ and connected to the new main organ. In 2019 the organ was renovated and the choir organ removed.

Bells

Five bells hang in the tower of St. Jodok . The oldest bell was probably cast by the Biberach foundry in 1438; With its 1.3 tons it is the second largest bell of the peal and survived the two world wars as the only sounding body of the historical peal. As a replacement for the bells destroyed in the war, St. Jodok received four new bells in 1950; They were cast in heavy ribs by the bell foundry Petit & Edelbrock (Gescher) . The bells have the chimes es 1 , f 1 , g 1 , b 1 and c 2 .
