Reiner Schuhenn

Reiner Schuhenn (born February 2, 1962 in Weingarten , Württemberg ) is a German church musician , choir director , university professor and former university rector of the Cologne University of Music and Dance .

Schuhenn studied school music and church music at the State University for Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart as well as German and philosophy and at the University of Stuttgart . At the Vienna University of Music , he specialized in conducting with Otmar Suitner and organ concert with Peter Planyavsky . His teachers included Dieter Kurz , Helmut Wolf, Bernhard Ader and Sergiu Celibidache , among others . In 1994 Schuhenn was appointed Episcopal Commissioner for Church Music and Head of the Department for Church Music in the Diocese of Essen . After a few years as vice dean, he was elected dean of Faculty 1 (conducting, church music, piano, composition, new music and composition) in 2007 and was appointed rector of the Cologne University of Music and Dance in 2009. In May 2017, Schuhenn was elected rector of the Mozarteum University in Salzburg with effect from October 1, 2017 , but did not take up this position due to differences with the university council there. Also in spring 2017, Schuhenn was appointed to the University Council of the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media by the Lower Saxony Minister of Science Gabriele Heinen-Kljajić , where he was elected Deputy Chairman of the University Council in the constituent meeting on October 4, 2017.

Schuhenn's other artistic works include jury activities at competitions, guest conducting as well as radio and television recordings for numerous broadcasters, including SWR , WDR , ZDF , ORF . Schuhenn has given concerts with well-known soloists such as Pierre-Laurent Aimard , Karl Michael Komma , Hans Sotin , Edda Moser and Julian Pregardien . The focus of his work is on the music of the 18th and 20th centuries.

Publications

Schuhenn is the editor and co-editor of several publications, including the "Kölner Chorbuch" (Carus), a book about Franz Schmidt at the Doblinger music publisher in Vienna, and Volume II "Ensembleleitung" in the compendium "Basic knowledge of church music", published by Carus Verlag , the complete work was awarded the German Music Edition Award 2011.
