history
Gunskirchen is mentioned as a "Kundeschiricum" in a document from Mondsee Monastery from 819. The word suggests that a church was already standing here at that time. Another document from 1088 shows that Gunskirchen is a parish.
The late Gothic church was built in several stages from the middle of the 15th century to the beginning of the 16th century. The year 1456 is entered in a window reveal of the tower and the number 1515 on the eastern keystone of the choir vault. At the beginning of the 18th century, the Gothic furnishings were replaced by a Baroque one, and in 1775 the west tower was given a Baroque design. In the years 1884 to 1897 the church interior was redesigned. Among other things, a neo-Gothic high altar was set up, which was created by the academic sculptor Engelbert Westreicher . During the renovation in 1962, the facility was partially redesigned. In 1990 the Rieger Orgelbau company installed a new organ with 29 registers. For this, the upper gallery had to be removed and a new staircase through the tool chamber was created. In the course of this work, a late Gothic fresco with a scene from the Mount of Olives was uncovered.
On October 25, 2015, the 500th anniversary of the completion of the parish church took place.
architecture
The late Gothic two-aisled hall church surrounded by a cemetery has a three-bay nave, which is vaulted with star and net ribs . The three-bay choir is vaulted with mesh ribs and has a 3/8 end . The gate to the sacristy is late Gothic, the sacristy itself is vaulted with star ribs.
Furnishing
The decor is neo-Gothic . Older altar figures were reused for the furnishings. On the south side altar there are sculptures of St. Anne , St. Catherine and St. Barbara . They were originally located in the Fallsbach branch church and originally date from the end of the 15th century. A baroque figure of St. John the Baptist , which is believed to have come from the old altar from 1706, is in sprung. The figures of this altar come from the Wels sculptor Johann Baptist Carlperger . On the north side altar are baroque statues of Saints Joachim , Anna and Joseph from the beginning of the 18th century. Opposite the south portal is a Gothic crucifixion group from the beginning of the 16th century. Opposite the pulpit is a baroque picture of St. John Nepomuk from the second quarter of the 18th century.
