parish
In 1170 a church at Kleve Castle is mentioned. When the city of Kleve was founded in 1242, this church initially remained outside the city fortifications. A branch church was built within the city walls, at which a minorite convent settled. From 1341 to 1802 the Kleve parish was incorporated into the lordly Marienstift. In 1924 the lower town church of St. Mariae Conception in Kleve was parish off as an independent parish, and in 1950 the new Christ the King Parish was established. In 1967 the parish of St. Mariae Himmelfahrt became a provost and the collegiate church also became a provost church. Since then, the respective pastor has carried the title provost. When the Klever parishes of St. Mariae Himmelfahrt, St. Mary's Conception , Christ-King, Sacred Heart of Jesus and the parish St. Lambertus Donsbrüggen were merged in 2005 , the collegiate parish church became the new parish of St. Mariae Himmelfahrt.

In 1334 Count Dietrich IX. von Kleve founded a Marienstift at his castle Monterberg near Kalkar , which was moved to the city of Kleve in 1341 with the help of his brother Johann . In 1802 the Klever Stift was abolished in the course of the Napoleonic secularization .
Building history
The old parish church of Kleve was a Romanesque, three-aisled basilica made of tuff stone. After the relocation of the Marienstift from Monterberg to Kleve, Count Dietrich IX. on August 12, 1341 the foundation stone for a new Gothic building; the work progressed so quickly that in 1347 he was buried in the construction site of the choir, which was consecrated in 1356. The nave was completed by 1394, and in 1426 the double tower facade was also completed. During the Second World War the church was almost completely destroyed. By 1956 the church could be restored (initially without the tower front). The reconstruction of the towers based on the historical model was completed in 1969.
