The museum was founded in 2005 by Hou Youyi (1936–2013), who grew up on the island and lived in Australia until his death . With the museum in Gulangyu he wanted to build the largest organ museum in the world. The collection is exhibited in a large building.

There is little information about the instruments for foreign visitors; Sound samples are not offered.

The largest organ in China by number of registers is located in the museum . This was created in 2017 by the Austrian organ building company Rieger from older instruments from Hutchings and Casavant. It has 103 sounding voices and 28 further registers on three manuals with pedal. Another organ is from Norman & Beard from 1909 with 21 stops and 2 manuals.
