St. Jakob (Burghausen)
The Catholic parish church of St. Jakob is the largest church in Burghausen . The landmark of the church is the mighty and widely visible 79 m high gray tower with a double-laced baroque onion.
history
The first Romanesque church on this site was on 19 September 1140 initially as a branch of the parish Mehring ordained . It had a high altar with two side altars. The church burned down almost completely in the town fire in 1353. In the same year a new building was started; the foundation stone for the tower with a square base was laid on July 17, 1470. The construction continued up to the present gallery. Above it was a cube-shaped structure with a smaller footprint. On the third floor, a pointed arch frieze ran around the tower and the fourth floor showed three keel arches with finials on each side .
In a town fire in 1504, the church and tower burned down. The restored church was consecrated a few years later, in 1511. In 1642 a pulpit and in 1675 an altar were installed. In 1717 the church was renovated and stuccoed by Josef Höpp from Burghausen .
In the Baroque period , the tower octagon (1721–1726) and the onion dome (1778–1781) were added.
On May 29, 1851, the southern part of the nave collapsed . The restoration took place from 1853 to 1855 according to plans by the architect Franz Denziger. In 1855 the baroque furnishings were removed and the interior was renewed in a neo-Gothic style.
Furnishing
High altar
In the tabernacle of the neo-Gothic high altar is a figure of the church patron with the 12 apostles next to it. Further up there is a figure each of Moses (left) and Abraham (right). The central group represents the Trinity with God the Father , Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit . On the trunk of the cross are Mary and, a little lower, the diocesan patrons St. Maximilian and St. Valentin.
Side altars
In the right side altar there is a figure of St. Sebastian by Johann Georg Lindt from 1759.
The Madonna on the left was created in 1960 by Hans Frank from Burghausen.
Choir window
On March 2, 1945, the windows of the church were destroyed in a bomb attack. Today's choir windows were created in 1948 based on a design by Albert Figel from the Bavarian court glass painting Gustav van Treek . On the left there are stations from the life of the church patron, on the right the “ Secret Revelation ” of the brother of James John.
Aisles
The crucifixion group in the right aisle dates from around 1856. In the shrine below are the bones of St. Anselm, which were brought here from Rome by eight Burghausen citizens in 1725. In front of it are the late Gothic baptismal font and a holy water container from 1635.
In the left aisle there is a baroque marble altar. The altar plate consists of the oldest surviving tombstone from 1330.
organ
The organ was built in 1986 by Rieger Orgelbau . It has 50 stops on three manuals and a pedal. The disposition is:

Exterior walls
On the outside walls of the church there are numerous tombstones from the 15th to 18th centuries, which are considered to be particularly valuable. The gravestones of Sigismund von Thumberg († 1658) and Sebastian Pittersberger († 1653) were made by Martin Zürn . Those of Maria Anna von Heppenstein († 1766) and Maria Anna Theresa von Manner († 1768) are works by Johann Georg Lindt. The epitaphs for the chaplain Johannes Perger († 1488), for Michaelreiber († 1481) and his wife Dorothea, as well as for the mayor Ulrich Gächenperger († 14 August 1492) and his two wives Magdalena nee. Prant and Katharina born Zeller are from Franz Sickinger . The latter epitaph is of particularly high artistic value:
"You can hardly imagine a more beautiful coat of arms tombstone between the Isar and Salzach than this zächenperger tombstone in Burghausen."
On the east side there is a group of Mounts of Olives . The wooden figures are from the workshop of Johann Jakob Schnabl. The paintings from 1796 were originally by Johann Nepomuk della Croce , but were recreated in 1948 by Otto Rückert based on the historical model.
church Square
The square around the church was probably a market place in earlier times. The southern part was later a cemetery (probably until 1805). From 1402 to 1804 there was a chapel parallel to the church . In 1855 a Marian column made of Untersberg marble with a cast iron statue was erected.
Compared to the tower, in the blade row 16, there is the Vicarage with Pfarr Mesnerhaus (diameter line 17) and the Chorregenten- and Kaplan house in the blade row 18th
Trivia
The tower of the church was the location of the final scene in 1983 for the television film Der Sandmann, based on the story by ETA Hoffmann, with the later Oscar winner Christoph Waltz in the lead role.
