Stonemason's mark by Franz Sickinger

Franz Sickinger (born before 1470; died after 1503) was a German stonemason of the late Gothic period who worked in Burghausen from 1475 to 1503 .

Life

Sickinger's own gravestone

There is no reliable knowledge about the descent and origin of Franz Sickinger. It can be assumed that Sickinger was already working as an apprentice or as a journeyman in the workshop of the brothers Hans and Matthäus Haldner in Munich around 1470 . Around 1475 Sickinger settled as an independent master in Burghausen, where he can be proven to be a citizen in 1489. He took over an already existing workshop, presumably from the master of the Lehnberg coat of arms gravestones , whose works can be verified in the Burghausen Rent Office since the middle of the 15th century . It is not known where the workshop was in Burghausen. Presumably Sickinger was a member of the Burghauser Steinmetzbruderschaft, which was founded in 1459, but was definitely not documented until 1478. Sickinger was entrusted with important commissions early on and was at times probably the most respected master in his field in the sub-duchy of Bavaria-Landshut . His last known works were created in 1503 for the Altötting Collegiate Foundation. Sickinger may have died in the Burghausen town fire on November 10, 1504. The tombstone he made during his lifetime is now in the tower hall of St. Jakob in Burghausen.

style

Sickinger's artistic handwriting is very characteristic. His particularly carefully worked out inscriptions were derived from the font used by the Haldners. Sickinger developed independent shapes, especially for the initials. For example, the capital letters A and H were often special, e.g. B. decorated with mocking masks. Corrugated tapes running around the edge of the plate with a little man holding her coat of arms are particularly common in his late work. The characters and decorative elements that were inserted into the font or with which gaps at the end of the line were filled are also characteristic. These rosettes, flower stalks or stylized branches and foliage are characterized by both a particular abundance and an extraordinary variety of forms.

Sickinger's works are made exclusively of red limestone, so-called red marble .
