The Heilig-Geist-Spital with Heilig-Geist-Kirche is a former hospital in the old town of Burghausen , which now serves as a meeting center.

In 1319 two houses and a farmstead were built in front of the town gates of Burghausen by Konrad Ermreich from Burghausen, who was married to Mechthilde, the sister of Friedrich the Mautner . According to a document, Jutta, the widow of Duke Stephen I, remembered the dukes Heinrich XIV , Otto IV and Heinrich XV. to found a hospital for the sick and needy in Burghausen. After all, it was Mautner Friedrich who donated a hospital building with a church and cemetery on September 24, 1332 and expanded it with a mill , a brewery , a bath room and three meat banks.

The hospital existed until 1956, when a new hospital was built on the banks of the Salzach. Thereupon the Diocese of Passau acquired the building complex, which from then on housed the Episcopal Study Seminar St. Altmann . The facility was closed in 1990 due to a lack of young people. After a thorough renovation, the House of the Holy Spirit Meeting was opened in 1993 , which functions as a church meeting center.

Hospital building

The entrance hall and corridor of the hospital building are formed from a groin vault with stitch caps . The flooring consists of Solnhofen tiles . Parts of the stairway to the first floor still have a baroque railing and balusters from the 2nd half of the 18th century. In the basement of the tower there is a red marble tablet with a Kreuzer roll and a pointed bread as a souvenir of the famine years 1771/72. At the entrance to the church there is an oil painting of Mary with St. Bartholomäus by Kajetan Forster.

Holy Spirit Church

As a Gothic building from the 14th century, the Heilig-Geist-Kirche is a specialty in Upper Bavaria. The ribbed vault in the choir probably dates from 1325/30. In 1504 the church burned down; the vault in the nave was rebuilt in 1511/12 by the Burghausen master mason Ulrich Händtler. The keystones at all intersection points of the vault ribs are characteristic. The tower with dome, pommel and cross was built in 1773 by Josef Lindmayr from Trostberg . In 1777 he baroque the exterior as well.

The baroque high altar dates from the 2nd half of the 18th century. The paintings of the Whitsun festival were created in 1792 by Johann Nepomuk della Croce . The figures on the side (left Franz Xaver , right Johann Nepomuk ) date from 1750 and were probably created by Johann Jakob Schnabl.

In a chapel room, which is closed by a wrought-iron rococo grille, there is a picture of the Madonna by Johann Nepomuk della Croce, as well as a rococo pulpit by Johann Georg Lindt from 1772.

A late Gothic marble epitarph for Friedrich Mautner von Katzenberg , who died in 1519, is embedded in the north inner wall. It shows a knight in armor standing on his dog (as a symbol of loyalty). In addition to the Mautner coat of arms, that of his wife, Margaretha von Leiningen, is also shown on the right. After the city fire in 1504, Friedrich Mautner did a great job of restoring the hospital church. The artist's name is Jörg Gärtner , a stonemason from Passau who was coveted by the nobility between 1505 and 1530 . On the south inner wall there is a coat of arms tombstone of the noble family of Mautner von Burghausen and Katzenberg from the end of the 15th century. The stone served as the cover plate of the Mautner Crypt until 1855. A man dressed in black was buried there until a flood in 1736. Presumably this was Oswald der Mautner, who died in 1448.

In 1969/70 frescoes from different eras were uncovered in the course of a renovation . The depiction of “Maria with the Child” from 1594 is remarkable. The paintings in the nave are probably by Johann Miller around 1650. The Renaissance paintings on the choir arch and the window reveals from 1566 are considered a rarity. A Biblia pauperum is painted on the gallery parapet , which depicts the sufferings of Christ in several scenes.
