List of Portuguese ambassadors in India
The list of Portuguese ambassadors in India lists the ambassadors of the Republic of Portugal in India . The two states have had diplomatic relations since 1948.
Relations between the two countries have existed since Vasco da Gama arrived in India in 1498. After India gained independence from Great Britain in 1947, Portugal and India first agreed diplomatic relations in 1948. In January 1949 , a Portuguese representative was accredited for the first time in India's capital New Delhi . Mutual relations were strained by the Portuguese colonies that still existed in India , to which India claimed and which Portugal did not want to renounce. In 1955, India de facto took control of the previously Portuguese Dadra and Nagar Haveli and in 1961, India occupied the remaining Portuguese possessions ( Goa , Daman and Diu ) in a brief military operation, which led to Portugal breaking off diplomatic relations. After the Carnation Revolution in 1974 and the end of the colonial Estado Novo regime in Portugal, both countries resumed diplomatic relations in 1977.
The Portuguese embassy is located at number 4 on Panchsheel Marg in Chanakyapuri in the Indian capital New Delhi.
Portugal also has a consulate general in Goa , and there are also honorary consulates in Calcutta (officially Kolkata) and Mumbai (formerly Bombay) .
