Johann Nepomuk della Croce (born August 7, 1736 in Pressano near Trient , † March 4, 1819 in Linz ) was an Austrian painter.

Life

The artist, born in Tyrol in 1736 , studied painting with his uncle Pietro Antonio Lorenzoni . After study trips through Italy , Germany , Hungary and France , he settled in Burghausen at the age of 19 and acquired one of the two painter's rights (i.e. approval of the guild) in 1756 from the widow of the painter Wolfgang Xaver Krötz (1715–1756). Regarding a sample painting for approval, he was in dispute with the owner of the second painter justice, Johann Martin Seltenhorn. Seltenhorn, who succeeded his father-in-law Innocent Anton Warathy around the same time , quickly gave up his painting, whereas della Croce took four years, which evidently aroused Seltenhorn's displeasure. Further disputes in the family and in the professional environment followed. On September 30, 1760 he married the mayor's daughter Maria Anna Margaretha Stainer (1731–1772) with whom he had seven children, six of whom died in childhood. His last child, Maria Barbara, was severely mentally and physically disabled . In 1772 he married his second wife Magdalena Kellhammer (1743-1811), with whom he had thirteen children, four of whom survived their father. Della Croce probably took over from Johann Georg Lindt as a teacher at the Burghauser drawing school from 1795 . In 1813 della Croce went to Linz to work as a portrait painter. He died of old age in his studio on March 4, 1819, without leaving any significant fortune.

Della Croce was one of the most sought-after portraitists between the episcopal cities of Passau and Salzburg and the administrative cities of Munich and Linz. In addition to history and altar paintings and frescoes in the southern Bavarian-Upper Austrian region, he painted 5,000 portraits, according to Felix Joseph von Lipowsky . The transition from late baroque to classicism can be seen very well in his pictures .

Della Croce was the founder of a family of painters in Burghausen, from which four other artists emerged, namely his sons Clemens Johann Evangelist della Croce (1782-1823) and Peter Anton della Croce (1785-1845), as well as Karl Klemens della Croce (1816 –1891), a son of Clemens Evangelist della Croce. The work of the family ended in the fourth generation with Clement della Croce (1848-1894), a son of Karl Klemens della Croce.
