Stephan I. (Bavaria)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stephan I (born March 14, 1271 in Landshut ; † December 10, 1310 ibid) was Duke of Lower Bavaria from 1290 to 1310 .

Life

He was the youngest child of Duke Heinrich XIII. of Lower Bavaria and Elisabeth of Hungary . Through his Hungarian mother, the name Stephan, previously not represented in the Wittelsbach family, was brought into the family. At first, a different career seemed to be opening up for Stephan, as the Salzburg cathedral chapter had postulated him to be its archbishop in 1290 . The curia, however, neither wanted Salzburg to be drawn into the Wittelsbach sphere of influence, nor that it would receive such a youthful prince of the church. Pope Nicholas IV refused to approve the election and appointed Konrad von Fohnsdorf-Praitenfurt as bishop.

In the summer of 1294 Stephan joined his older brothers Otto III. and Ludwig III. († 1296) joined the co-government of Lower Bavaria, which he led until his death. During the absence of his brother in Hungary from 1305 to 1308, he led the government alone, without Otto having legally resigned from it. Stephan was an opponent of the Habsburgs and died in 1310 during a war against Frederick of Austria . He was buried in the Seligenthal monastery near Landshut.

Stephan was married to Jutta (Judith) von Schweidnitz (* 1285/87; † September 15, 1320), a daughter of Duke Bolko I von Schweidnitz , since 1297 .
