Ludwig III. (Lower Bavaria)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ludwig III. (* February 9, 1269 in Landshut ; † May 13, 1296 ibid) was Duke of Lower Bavaria.

Life

He was the son of Duke Heinrich I of Lower Bavaria and his wife Elisabeth of Hungary . He ruled from 1290 to 1296 together with his brothers Otto III. and Stephan I. about the Wittelsbach sub- duchy of Lower Bavaria . According to an agreement, Ludwig and Stephan only became co-regents of their older brother in the Duchy of Lower Bavaria in the summer of 1294 after the death of their father in 1290. On May 30, 1293, the three brothers in Vilshofen an der Donau concluded a court order that was to regulate the future coexistence of the three sovereigns. This contained considerable restrictions on the keeping of the court, according to which, among other things, each of the three brothers should only own a total of twelve horses for their stables for use. But Ludwig had taxes increased in order to make keeping his court more expensive. He died childless in 1296; his inheritance fell to his brothers.
