Ivo Brunner (born April 7, 1952 in Gaißau ) is an Austrian school pedagogue, Anglist, teacher trainer and university professor. He is founding rector of the Vorarlberg University of Education and founding chairman of the Austrian Rectors' Conference of Universities of Education.

Life

Education

After graduating from the music and pedagogical federal high school in Feldkirch, Brunner began his teaching degree for high schools in English , physical education and pedagogy in 1971 . He spent a year abroad at the University of London in 1973/74 and graduated from the University of Innsbruck in 1976 with a Mag. Phil. these studies. In 1978 he was with the dissertation ( "Literature in English classes") in English / American to Dr. phil. PhD . He then devoted himself to postdoctoral studies in communication sciences and comparative linguistics at Columbia University in New York.  

Professional career

After several years of teaching at grammar schools in Tyrol and Vorarlberg, Brunner switched to teacher training in 1983 and was appointed director of the Federal Pedagogical Academy in Vorarlberg in 1994. He headed this institution of compulsory school teacher training for twelve years until he was appointed founding rector of the college of education in 2006. Several visiting professorships, research stays and lectureships have led him to universities. a. to the USA ( Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and City University of New York), Russia ( Maxim Gorki University and Technical University of Yekaterinburg ), Finland ( University of Oulu and University of Lapland ), Hungary (University of Szekszárd / University of Pécs ) or Sweden ( University of Boras ).

Brunner's main interests are foreign language didactics and the high-quality, research-oriented professionalization of compulsory school teacher training according to international standards. He repeatedly made his international experience and expertise available to the Ministry of Science and Education and was thus significantly involved in both the 1999 Academies Studies Act and the 2005 Austrian Higher Education Act .

Private

Ivo Brunner grew up as the youngest child in a family of nine booksellers. When he started his professional life, he also volunteered for many years as a cultural advisor in community politics. He lives in Höchst on Lake Constance and has written volumes of text and pictures about his home region. He is married and has a daughter and a son.
